If you're interested in what rally driving is all about, we've described a few rally driving techniques as well.
First of all, the bad news: trying to drive a rally car faster probably won't make you go faster. A heavyweight right foot will be a liability. Rally driving is a mixture of showing the car who's boss and being smooth in your reactions.

Basic rally driving techniques
With most forms of rallying the car has variable grip, because of the surface changes, especially on gravel or when wet. This means you can't just drive fast around corners and rely on the tyres to hold you on course. To go rally driving competitively, you have to set the car up for the corners, so that when a slide starts, it takes you around the corner, not off the road. The technique for doing this varies for different rally cars. We've described some techniques as you go down this page.

What's the rally experience like ?
An introductory day will show you some techniques like...
Opposite Lock
\r\nTurn towards the corner and then when the car starts sliding, turn away from the corner - Madness !
Hand-brake turn
Dip the clutch, pull the handbrake, the car swings around. That's the easy bit. But you've got to do it just enough to point the right way and then catch the car quickly with power to get you away up the track. Thats the tricky part !
Rally driving for the kids
Its all very well letting them build radio-controlled rally cars, but there's nothing like the real thing. Instant credibility in school the next day ! Brilliant for birthdays.

OK, they can beat you on a PC - what about in real life. Don't bank on it - their reactions are quicker and they learn better. What you have in your favour is level-headedness.....or is it ?
Rally driving in a 4 wheel drive rally car
The first thing you notice is the grip under acceleration. Even on loose surfaces its much better than the RWD or FWD. Understandable as you have 4 driving wheels. But don't be deceived - if you take your foot off the accelerator suddenly and lock up all 4 wheels it will slide straight on ! Also with the extra grip, you can be sliding quite nicely with some power on, only to find that the car "bites" and pulls you rapidly into the inside of a corner.

Generally, rally drivers take a wider line into corners to stop this happening. Getting a 4x4 around a corner quickly is quite tricky because you've got 4 driving wheels. As soon as you take your foot off the accelerator, the front driving wheels act as a brake, which makes steering the car difficult. The idea is to get the car at the right angle before the corner, so you've got full steering on the corner and don't have to brake or lift off.

These days will find you learning techniques such as
The Power slide
This means learning to slide the car with the power on, using both the power and steering together to keep the car in the right position. This is what makes for real speed and its not easy.
Left foot braking
\r\nThis is used with FWD cars, so that you can keep your right foot on the accelerator and make the back of the car slide (because the rear brakes will be on).
